I was the one who insisted to swim with the Whale Sharks in Oslob because it’s exciting and we were so near, we were just in Dumaguete. The morning before the Whale Sharks encounter, I suddenly had change of mind because I was afraid, Gentle Giants might eat me, I suddenly remember Jonah from the Bible. But then I was convinced, that’s not going to happen, and I was the one who planned it after all. After that, I became excited again and listened to the instructions very carefully and then ride the boat to the Gentle Giants.
I jump immediately to my excitement when it’s time to jump (muro-ami feels). I was enjoying myself watching the Gentle Giants and taking photos with them. But then while snorkeling I saw the Whale Sharks eating, I wonder, where was that coming from. I saw that the boatman is giving food to the Whale Sharks and I think there’s something wrong with that. I suddenly think of Pavlov, the Classical Conditioning of Ivan Pavlov. This is bad, I said to myself (it’s like a circus!). I’m not really sure yet while I was there. After that day, I researched everything about it and I found why you shouldn’t swim with the Whale Sharks in Oslob.
My biggest mistake I did and why you shouldn’t swim with the Whale Sharks in Oslob
Here are my pictures, and please, DO NOT repeat what we just did. Learn from my lesson (Although I follow all the instructions). In the pictures, it looks like that I was near them but I wasn’t, really. I swam fast when I saw them coming. Some people followed the instructions carefully while some of them didn’t (intentionally or unintentionally, I don’t know).
In Donsol, they treat Whale Sharks correctly. Go there if you want to swim with the Whale Sharks. Whale Sharks in Donsol are not trained that human and boat is equals to food. I want to go there and swim with the Whale Sharks and I’ll update you what is it like. I like the idea of visiting them in their habitat and join them instead of swam with them like you were in a circus.
